Kaisaniemi Park is Helsinki’s oldest public park, founded in 1812 and located just a short walk from the Central Railway Station, in the Kluuvi district. It takes its name from Catharina “Cajsa” Wahllund, a 19th-century restaurant keeper whose popular ravintola once stood here, and whose legacy lives on in the name Kaisaniemi. Today the park forms a large green space in the very centre of Finland’s capital, with lawns, walking paths, a pond, sports fields and mature trees that create a surprisingly calm atmosphere right next to offices, university buildings and busy streets. Kaisaniemi has hosted numerous major events over the years, including concerts, the Helsinki Day programme, the World Village Festival and other open-air happenings, while the neighbouring University of Helsinki Botanic Garden with its historic glasshouses adds a cultural and scientific layer to the area.

For visitors, Kaisaniemi Park is easy to weave into almost any Helsinki itinerary: it connects directly to the Central Station area, to the University quarter, to Hakaniemi and to the city’s key cycling routes via the new Kaisantunneli. People come here to cut through the city on foot or by bike, to sit by the pond, to play football or basketball on the pitches, or simply to take a break between museums, Helsinki restaurants and kahvila nearby. The combination of central location, event culture and everyday greenery makes the park feel both lived-in and special, and despite occasional headlines about renovation and safety challenges, many reviews still highlight Kaisaniemi as a convenient urban green escape with a solid rating among Helsinki’s outdoor spots.
