Market Square (Kauppatori) is one of the most vibrant and picturesque places in Helsinki, located at the South Harbour between the Presidential Palace, City Hall and the ferry terminals for Suomenlinna. It is a lively open-air marketplace filled with aromas of fresh coffee, local fish dishes, seasonal berries, handmade crafts and traditional Finnish street food. Early in the morning vendors set up stalls selling salmon soup, fried vendace, pastries and farm produce, while sightseeing boats and harbour ferries depart just a few metres away. Surrounded by historical buildings and waterfront views, the square naturally becomes part of almost every walking route through central Helsinki.
Kauppatori is both a daily market and a cultural hub of Finland’s capital: it hosts harbour cruises, island tours, winter events and summer food fairs, with small ravintola and kahvila kiosks operating throughout the season. During summer, the square transforms into an outdoor dining area with local Helsinki restaurants offering quick seaside meals, and in winter it becomes a festive spot with seasonal markets. For travellers it’s an ideal place to taste local flavours, watch harbour life, take photos of the open sea and feel the city’s rhythm.
