Sompasauna is a free public sauna maintained by volunteers and the visitors themselves, currently located by the sea on Mustikkamaa island. It is one of Helsinki’s most informal and open saunas: entrance is free, the saunas are wood-heated and after a hot session you can plunge straight into the Baltic Sea. There is no staff, no conventional showers or changing rooms, but there are a few simple sauna cabins, basic changing areas, a dry toilet and lockers for those who bring their own lock. The atmosphere is fully communal: everyone is expected to help with chopping wood, heating the stoves, keeping the area clean and respecting the “sauna peace”. This is a sauna for people looking for the most authentic, simple and free Finnish public sauna experience.
