The Ice Age Monument stands along the forested Pyynikki Ridge in the city of Tampere, a short walk downhill from the Pyynikki Observation Tower along Näkötornintie. Created by sculptor Georg Henriksson and unveiled in 1945, the monument marks the height of an ancient shoreline left behind as the continental ice sheet retreated. Today this former beach lies roughly 120–130 metres above sea level, reminding visitors that Pyynikki once rose as an island from an Ice Age sea while the landscape around present-day Tampere looked entirely different.

An information plaque explains how post-glacial land uplift reshaped the region: around 9,500 years ago the ancient connection between the waters finally closed, Lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi separated, and rising water levels eventually overtopped the ridge, carving out the Tammerkoski rapids that later anchored the growth of Tampere as an industrial city.

The monument itself, set among pines and rocks, works as both a piece of public art and a small open-air geology lesson, often included in walks that combine the Pyynikki observation tower, ridge trails, local viewpoints and nearby Tampere attractions. For hikers, families and anyone interested in Finland’s natural history, the Ice Age Monument is a compact but meaningful stop that adds context to the dramatic ridgeline scenery.
