The Rock of Names, known in Finnish as Nimikallio, is a rocky outcrop on the Pyynikki Ridge in Tampere, Finland. It forms part of the Pyynikki esker landscape and sits along local walking paths in the Pyynikki Nature Reserve. The cliff face is covered in carved initials and dates left by Tampere residents over the decades, with some inscriptions dating back to the 19th century, which is why the spot is called “the Rock of Names”. From the top you get forest and city views, with glimpses towards Lake Pyhäjärvi and the surrounding Tampere neighbourhoods.
Today Nimikallio is a small but memorable scenic viewpoint often included in walks around Pyynikki together with the Pyynikki observation tower, the nature trail and nearby beaches. The area is easy to reach by bus or on foot, and the short detour to the Rock of Names adds a bit of local history and atmosphere to a standard forest walk. Travel blogs describe it as a “little extra” near the main Pyynikki sights, worth a stop for photos, a short break on the rocks and a look at the old carved names that quietly document everyday lives in Tampere.
