The museum presents 20th-century and contemporary art from Finland and abroad. It holds about 8 to 10 exhibitions a year, covering contemporary art, modern art and design. It has four art collections, including its own EMMA collection of nearly 3,000 works. Permanent collection displays include Collection Kakkonen (ceramics and glass) and the Saastamoinen Foundation collection. The building, designed by architect Aarno Ruusuvuori, was formerly a printing house, and the museum was named Museum of the Year 2018.
Guided tours and art workshops are arranged for groups, and event spaces can be hired. The EMMA Shop sells glass and ceramic art, design and art products, also online. The car park, entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible, and wheelchairs can be rented.
