Established in 1971, the foundation promotes Finnish invention and commercialisation. Its predecessor began work at the Finnish Cultural Foundation's invention office in 1957. It offers tools for assessing and developing ideas, and connections with business and innovation experts.
The Ideajalostamo, or Idea Refinery, service supports innovators. The foundation also maintains a competition platform and peer-support group and organises InnoSuomi competitions. Its audiences include individual inventors, businesses and students. It has not funded invention development since 2014.
