The park was built around the tunnel power plant's basin on the bank of the Kyröskoski rapids. With a 22-metre drop, the rapids are considered to be the Hämeen Hälläpyörä mentioned in the Kalevala. Industrialisation began in the 1860s, followed by a paper mill about a decade later. The Metsä Board Kyro paperboard mill operates here, served by a bio-power plant completed in 2012.
The park and rapids can be visited around the clock. Guided group tours can be booked in advance, and rapids-release displays are also held.
