This soldiers' home is a free-time place for conscripts and also works as a café and kiosk. It is run by Hämeenlinna Sotilaskotiyhdistys ry, with paid staff and volunteer sotilaskotisisaret, the women volunteers of the soldiers' home movement. Soldiers' home activity began in 1918. This one stands outside the garrison gates, so visiting guests can meet conscripts here.
Sotilaskoti 1 operates separately inside a closed military area, and a virtual tour of it includes a 1941 version of the soldiers' home. Volunteers also take the service out to the field, with coffee and doughnuts in the forest. The seating, car park and entrance are wheelchair accessible.
