The park is part of the National Urban Parks network. In the nearby Rantapuisto park grows the Tsaarinpoppeli, a poplar said to be the largest tree in Finland by volume. It was planted in the early 1900s and survived the 1901 Kymijoki flood, which destroyed other trees in the park. Its official circumference at breast height is 637 cm, with a crown spread of about 23 m and a height of about 35 m.
Rantapuisto was started in 1892, when the town's first spa was completed. The town received town rights in 1839 and developed into a spa town and summer resort. A riverside walking and cycling network of over 10 km runs along the Jyrängönvirta river. The car park and entrance are wheelchair accessible.
