Founded in August 1918, the communist party belongs to the Party of the European Left. It re-entered the party register in 1997 and revised its programme in 2007 and 2022.
It publishes the Tiedonantaja newspaper in print and digitally 11 times a year. Its youth organisation, Kommunistinuoret, was founded in 2019. Activities include fielding parliamentary election lists and international cooperation with communist parties.
