Established in 2011, the independent public-law institution operates under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. It handles moose hunting permits, exemptions from game protection and permits for prohibited hunting methods, while promoting sustainable game management, population monitoring and management plans.
It provides training and advice to hunters and game management associations and appoints and supervises their hunting supervisors and examiners. Around fifteen regional offices cover mainland Finland. The head office shares premises with the Uusimaa regional office.
