Founded in 1945, the national orienteering governing body organises competitions, recreational courses and training. Events include the Jukola relay, Fin5 week and Kainuun Rastiviikko. It belongs to the IOF and the Nordic NORD council.
Member clubs provide access to national competitions, with a licence required for competitive classes. Coach and course-setter training is offered. The body publishes Suunnistaja magazine and operates an online shop. Its office is in Sporttitalo.
