The viewing point overlooks rapids admired by travellers since the 1700s. The flow was harnessed for hydropower in 1929, and water is released into the channel for rapids shows. The site forms part of a national landscape and Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark. It is surrounded by Kruununpuisto, established in the mid-1800s and described by the website as Finland's oldest nature reserve.
A show lasts about 16 minutes, with the strongest flow around the eighth minute. Summer releases are accompanied by Sibelius's Karelia Suite or the rock symphony Whitewater Symphony. The city organises them with dam operator Fortum. The entrance and parking area are not wheelchair accessible.
