The centre is part of the University of Eastern Finland and supports science, mathematics and technology education. It encourages children and young people towards these subjects and helps teachers with their teaching. Hands-on science activities for young people run in its LUMA laboratory and as virtual science clubs. Pupils can join the Tiedeseikkailu school visit programme, and teachers have continuing education and science events.
Equipment is lent free of charge to schools and educational institutions. The laboratory hosts teaching practice lessons for trainee teachers, and the centre helps with thesis ideas and offers work placements and vocational school work-experience periods. It works with schools, early childhood education and companies. The entrance and car park are wheelchair accessible.
