Founded in 1950, the non-profit grant foundation supports science, art and other Karelian cultural activity in North and South Karelia. It also maintains cultural and heritage sites including Karjalatalo, the Parppeinvaara area and Murtovaara farm museum.
Grants support research, art and cultural work, with student grants for young people from North Karelia. The Tekoja Karjalasta publication series presents people and groups it has supported. A research grant programme on third-generation Karelian identity began in 2018.
