The natural outflow of Ylä- and Ala-Viivajärvi lakes widens into a backwater between densely wooded banks. Plants include wood anemone, wild strawberry and ground ivy. Saksila Canal retains old timber-floating structures, with large aspens beside the spruce and birch woodland.
A riverside lean-to shelter is the only one on the west side of Lake Kivijärvi. The site is linked to a local legend about Riihi-Matti and the Hanhilampi canal, said to date from the 1870s.
