This is the central hospital of the South Karelia wellbeing services county, on the shore of Lake Saimaa. Patients usually come for treatment on a referral from a doctor. The hospital has a joint emergency department and a wide range of outpatient clinics, plus inpatient wards such as maternity, children's, intensive care, psychiatric and rehabilitation wards. Laboratory sampling and imaging (X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, neurophysiology) are done on site.
Parking is available in the adjacent multi-storey car park and in outdoor lots, with some spaces reserved for disabled drivers. A volunteer peer-support and guide service, OLKA, operates in the main lobby. The premises are scent-free, and flowers are not allowed on the wards for allergy and hygiene reasons. Wards are reached by phone through the hospital switchboard. The hearing loop, seating, car park, entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible.
