The fish passage was built beside the Poutu regulation dam on the Lapuanjoki river, about 3 km downstream of the town centre. The dam was built in 1991 and the fish passage was completed in 2022, in cooperation with the South Ostrobothnia ELY Centre, Kone-Kovera Oy and Pipelife.
The passage is about 40 m long and made of four sections of 1600 mm spiral-seam corrugated pipe. Plastic lamellas every 5 m and stone material inside approximate natural conditions, and three lighting shafts add more natural-like conditions. It lets migratory fish pass the weir, and roach and perch were already seen using it after opening.
