This medieval parish church was built in the early 1500s, when Finland was Catholic, and is dedicated to St Birgitta. Its architecture shows influences from both the Satakunta and Häme building traditions. It was expanded into a cross-shaped church in the 1830s, with a quatrefoil window added to each arm. Major interior renovations were carried out in 1895 and the 1920s, the last major restoration was completed in 1984, and the lighting was redesigned in 2003.

It is the main church of the parish and hosts Sunday services, baptisms, weddings, funerals, concerts and gatherings. The accessible entrance is by a ramp at the south door near the bell tower; the church toilet is not accessible, but the parish hall toilets are. A hearing loop is installed, and a large-print hymnbook is available at the bell tower entrance. There is a defibrillator, a piano or grand piano, a sound system and a baptismal font. Parking is at Kirkkotori square and nearby, with an accessible space under the bell tower, and the train station is close.
