Municipal services are aimed at residents, newcomers, visitors and entrepreneurs. Founded in 1887, the rural municipality covers 439.2 square kilometres, including 17.2 square kilometres of water. It lies on Finland's south-eastern border, with the Salpa Line defences passing through it.
The area has the Salpa Line Museum and local recreation facilities. Plots are offered for detached-house construction. The municipal hall entrance and car park are wheelchair accessible.
