The parish belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and provides worship services, baptisms, weddings, funerals and confirmation classes. It also runs activity groups, a singing circle and youth activities. Its history is linked to the Oulujärvi wilderness parish formed in 1559, and it was re-established in 1599.
A pastoral telephone service allows anonymous conversations about personal concerns. The fifth parish church was built in Kiehimä village in 1946; the older Paltaniemi picture church dates from 1726. This location has an accessible entrance, parking area and toilet.
