This former Finnish Defence Forces fortress and training island lies in the Selkämeri National Park, about 4 km from the mainland. The island covers roughly 30 hectares. Its history includes a 1600s pasture, a Russian defence site in the First World War and a coastal artillery fortress from the Winter War. Four gun positions are preserved, and one can fire salutes by prior booking. Guided tours cover former military sites such as the barracks, observation and fire-control towers and tunnels.
Accommodation is in 4-person and 6-person cabins or in tents. The restaurant and café Wanha Kasarmi has an outdoor terrace, and two saunas built in the 1950s can be booked by groups. Meeting rooms take 10 to 50 people, some in the gun tunnel or an underground bunker. The guest harbour has moorings on the east and south sides. The island is reached by scheduled and charter boats run by Saaristokuljetus. Seating, the entrance and the toilet are wheelchair accessible, and the place is child-friendly.
