The range area is run by Simpeleen Hahlo ry, a shooting club founded on 6 October 1964. It has a 50 m small-bore rifle range and a 25 m pistol range, and Simpeleen Metsästys- ja Ampumaseura runs a moose shooting range. The indoor range was built by the paper mill in 1964 and the outdoor range was finished in 1969; the club uses the pistol and small-bore ranges under a lease.
The club belongs to the Finnish Shooting Sports Federation as a special club. It runs a shooting school for children and youths aged 8 to 14, teaching mainly with air guns and stressing safety. It has won national titles, including in the Kultahippu final. According to the website, the condition of the ranges is satisfactory at most.
