On an exposed rock outcrop in Santavaara stands a rustic log shelter, with a second plank-built shelter beside it. The view opens over the Ounasjoki river toward Ylikylä and Nivankylä. Both shelters have benches and fire pits, and firewood is available from a shed nearby. The site is marked as easy.
A gravel road continues from the end of Santavaarantie, and the shelter is a short walk of about 300 m away. In winter the road is used by snowmobiles, and the shelter can be reached on foot, snowshoes or skis; a snowmobile route passes it. There is no accessible parking or entrance.
