Gravedigger Marko Ruuskanen's decorated birdhouses have grown into an ensemble of hundreds of artworks. He began around twenty years ago at Kirkkoniemi and Talvisalo cemeteries. Some houses reproduce old, vanished buildings and stand on their former sites.
A row of his love-themed birdhouses lines the linden avenue at Punkaharju station's art pier. Guided tours can be arranged with the local guides' association. The works form part of a self-taught art mapping project coordinated by Maaseudun Sivistysliitto, and a book covers the architectural birdhouses.
