This complex designed by Alvar Aalto is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Aalto Works series of 13 sites. Six Aalto-designed buildings form a unified city centre, one of his most significant realised urban plans. The buildings remain in their original use: city hall, library, church, parish centre, theatre and government offices.
The area is open to the public free of charge during the opening hours of the individual sites. Guided tours can be booked, and the Lakeuden Risti church tower has a viewing platform. It is a walk from the bus and transport centre, with car parks nearby and bicycle racks by the theatre. The adjacent Apila library (2012, JKMM Architects) is linked to the Aalto library by an underground passage. The car park, entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible.
