This is the fifth church in the history of its parish. The present building was designed by the architect Oldenburg, construction began in the mid-1850s and the church was consecrated in September 1870. It is built in a late Renaissance style, with neo-Gothic details that emphasise solidity. Together with Kuhmo church, it is the largest church in the Kainuu region.
A roadside church service runs at the church site. The parish also operates Vuokatti church, a parish hall, a funeral chapel and a catering service. The car park, entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible.
