The rapids form a recreation area with an industrial history linked to a manor. Distilling began at the estate in 1878, followed by a sawmill and boatbuilding. Its first hydropower station dates from 1913, and an electricity company operated a plant from 1944 to 1956.
A non-profit company manages the area to restore the rapids and develop recreation and tourism. The former hydropower plant closed in 2012 because it lacked a permit under water legislation.
