The Näsikallio Water Fountain is a striking Art Nouveau–style granite and bronze fountain in the Näsinpuisto park at the northern end of Hämeenpuisto in Tampere, Finland. Completed in 1913, it is considered Tampere’s first major public artwork. The architectural composition was designed by Birger Federley, while sculptor Emil Wikström created the three bronze groups. At the top sits the maiden of the North (Pohjanneito) from the Kalevala, perched on a rainbow and spinning a golden thread, referencing Finnish folklore and the idea of wealth born from nature and labour. Two lower groups depict family scenes: a grandfather and grandson by a water wheel symbolise factory industry, and a grandmother teaching her granddaughter to knit represents domestic work — together they mirror early 20th-century life in an industrial city. The project was funded by a donation from merchant Nikolai Tirkkonen, which is why the work is sometimes also called the Tirkkonen Fountain.

Today the fountain forms a focal point in the Näsinpuisto hillside, surrounded by lawns, paths and benches with views over Lake Näsijärvi, the Näsilinna (Milavida) palace and the historic Finlayson factory area. The setting feels like a small scenic terrace above the city, yet it is only a short walk from downtown Tampere and other attractions. Visitors often notice small bullet marks on the bronze, a reminder of the 1918 Civil War battles that touched this part of the city. The fountain is frequently praised in reviews as one of Tampere’s most beautiful fountains and a peaceful spot to pause for photos or a short rest while exploring the city, and it maintains a solid rating among local landmarks.
