On Kakolanmäki hill in Turku, this hotel opened in September 2020 in a former prison once known as the largest and most dangerous in Finland, with over 1,300 inmates in the 1930s. The oldest building on the hill, Graniittilinna, dates from 1853, and the prison moved out in 2007. The lobby is in the former administrative wing, and some rooms are converted cells. The hill is also home to the Kakola Brewing Company, a bakery café, a coffee roastery and Kakola Spa, opened in 2022.
The Ruben restaurant and Hilarius lunch restaurant take their names from the prison's past, and the Riviera terrace opens in summer. Rooms, tables, venues, the adult-oriented spa and Kakola tours can be booked online.
