The church was built in 1850–1853 to a design by Ernst B. Lohrman, using local granite and bricks made on site. Its predecessor was a wooden church of Saint Ulrika, first built around 1700 and later enlarged. It seats about 240 people and has excellent acoustics, so concerts can be held here. It is a protected site of the Finnish Heritage Agency, and since 2002 it has belonged to the Northern Lapland parish federation, having previously been state property.

Services are held roughly every three weeks, with weekly masses and quiet prayer times in between. The church is also used for baptisms, weddings and funeral blessings. The entrance is step-free, there is an accessible outdoor toilet and an induction loop, but no public address system. Parking is available beside the church and along the road next to it.
