The municipal building houses the administration of the northernmost municipality in Finland and the EU, founded in 1876. According to its website, the population is about 1,100 and the area 5,370 km². Municipal services are offered in Finnish and Northern Sami at all three village centres.
The municipality is responsible for early childhood education, basic education, upper secondary school, the library, and culture and sports. It also handles housing, building control, land-use planning, plots, and waste and water services. Council agendas and minutes are published on the website, and meetings are streamed on YouTube. The car park and entrance are wheelchair accessible.
