The association provides mediation for criminal cases and certain civil disputes under the Finnish Mediation Act (1015/2005). Mediation is voluntary, confidential, impartial and free of charge. It brings the parties together to discuss the harm caused by a crime or dispute.
Meetings are led by trained volunteer mediators under the professional guidance of the mediation office. General management and supervision of mediation is handled by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, and national coordination and statistics by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).
