The upper secondary school was founded in the 1870s as the first Finnish-language normal lyceum, and its history includes a number of notable alumni. Girls were admitted with the comprehensive school reform, and the school celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2023. It is part of the Tavastia education consortium and has over 500 students. Besides the general line, it offers a sports line and a creative entrepreneurship line (YRI).
An adult line allows flexible study arrangements, and Urheiluakatemia Tavastia helps student athletes combine competitive sport with their studies. The Kurkistuskurssit are mostly free online courses that introduce higher education, and completed courses count as upper secondary studies. Students apply through the spring joint application. The car park and entrance are wheelchair accessible.
