The city museum runs four sites: the Skogster building, the Savings Bank Museum, Sibelius's birthplace and Palander House. It was founded in 1910 and opened to the public in 1912. In 2016 the main exhibition premises moved to Skogster's former commercial building in the city centre. It became the regional museum of Kanta-Häme in 1980 and a regional responsibility museum in 2020, and since 2020 it handles authority tasks for built and archaeological heritage in Kanta-Häme.
Sibelius's birthplace came under the museum's management in the late 1980s. Exhibitions cover regional cultural history, with family and school programmes. E-Passi, Edenred and the Museum Card are accepted, along with annual and Kaikukortti admission cards. The entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible.
