The art museum shows Finnish art from the 1800s to the present, along with a small collection of foreign art. The collection holds almost 8,000 works, including pieces evacuated from Viipuri in 1939 that belong to the Viipuri Foundation and Viipurin Taiteenystävät. Artists include Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Albert Edelfelt, Eero Järnefelt, Hugo Simberg, Victor Westerholm, Magnus Enckell and Pekka Halonen.
The museum opened to the public in May 1952 in a former state grain warehouse designed by Engel and built in 1838. The second building is the red-brick Lohrmann grain warehouse of 1852, turned into a contemporary art space in 1997. The courtyard has the Pinella villa, built in 1906, which houses the museum offices. The museum runs temporary exhibitions and public art projects, and the Artbulance art project in ambulances. The car park, entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible.
