The association was founded in 1994 as a network for people interested in shamanism. Its website shares information on shamanism past and present and related topics, with articles and event announcements for members. It describes its approach as independent of worldview or religious belief. It offers a network and support for people who seek shamanic help or want to understand shamanic experiences. A magazine called Kumu has been published since the late 1990s.
Membership is open to anyone who pays the membership dues. Activities include basic courses in shamanic journeying, drumming circles, shamanic gatherings and conferences. The association has a published code of ethics for shamanic work, along with guidance for people seeking shamanic healing. It is based in Lapinlahden Lähde, and a toilet is available.
