Founded in 1945, The English School in Helsinki teaches in Finnish and English and says it was the first school in Finland to offer bilingual education in these two languages. Its roughly 700 pupils, aged 5 to 19, range from preschool to upper secondary level, and upper secondary students take the Finnish matriculation examination.
The school has two campuses: one for preschool and grades 1 to 6, the other for grades 7 to 9 and upper secondary. The upper secondary school offers two programmes and international exams, the preschool has day care, and younger pupils can join afternoon activities. Applications go through the school's website, and the entrance is step-free.
