The Old Market Hall is the oldest of Helsinki's market halls, built beside Market Square in 1888–1889 to a design by architect Gustaf Nyström; the opening year is marked on its southern gable. Traders sell fish and shellfish, meat, cheese, vegetables, fruit, spices, coffee and tea as well as gifts, and the hall also has Finland's smallest Alko, the state alcohol shop. It is known for its salmon soup and fish sandwiches.
The hall is run by Helsingin Kaupunkitilat Oy, a company owned by the City of Helsinki. Traders may keep their own hours. The entrance, toilets and car park are step-free, and cards and mobile payments are accepted. Ferries to Suomenlinna leave from Market Square next door.
