This non-profit umbrella organisation brings together Finland's cancer associations and patient organisations. Its predecessor, the Finnish Cancer Society, was founded in 1936, and its member associations have about 97,000 members and around 4,500 volunteers. It funds cancer research with grants of about 7.7 million euros a year.
People affected by cancer can use peer support, a chat service with cancer nurses and a telephone support line. Volunteer work runs through regional cancer associations and national patient associations, such as those for breast cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and childhood cancer families. The organisation also works on prevention and advocacy covering tobacco control, diet, physical activity and UV protection. The office is in the premises of the Finnish Medical Association.
