The city museum was founded in 1904 and focuses on maritime history and shipbuilding. The Malmska gården manor shows a shipowner's office, ship portraits and ship models. According to its website, Strengbergs Tobaksmuseum is the only one of its kind in Finland. The new Tempus exhibition hall opened in spring 2023.
The collections include objects, art, textiles and a museum library, and the photographic collections are among the largest in Finland. Part of the material can be searched online through Finna.fi. Guided tours are offered in Swedish, Finnish and English, and school and daycare groups from Jakobstad visit free of charge. The toilet is wheelchair accessible.
