Built in 1993 during an expansion of the hydropower plant on the Kemijoki river, the fish pass is 230 metres long with a 12-metre rise. It has a vertical-slot lower section and an upper Denil section. PVO-Vesivoima owns the power plants, while Keminmaa municipality owns the pass.
Operation, maintenance and development are handled by Lohijokitiimi under a lease with the municipality. Simsonar counters in use since 2021 record migrating fish on video to determine their species, size and number.
