The museum is one of the sites run by the Finnish National Museum, and its collections are part of the National Museum's holdings of about 590,000 objects. The permanent exhibition Kohtalona Ruotsinsalmi tells the story of the Battle of Ruotsinsalmi and the fortress town built nearby afterwards. A second permanent exhibition, Rohkeus, rakkaus, vapaus! Muumiseikkailu, is based on the Moomin characters and their life values and philosophy.
The museum is housed in the Vellamo Maritime Centre. Guided tours and changing exhibitions are on offer, and the National Museum sends out an email newsletter about its events and exhibitions. The car park, entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible.
