Designed in 1982 by architect Markku Viitasalo, the bird-themed sculpture floats on the Savilahti water area. It was commissioned by the University of Eastern Finland. Viitasalo was known as an advocate of timber construction.
The sculpture was renovated in 2021 and fitted with coloured lighting to mark festive and themed days. Reittitiimi Oy designed the lighting with the Valon kaava coordinators. Preserving the work in its setting has been considered culturally important.
