This river meanders through clay soils south of the first Salpausselkä ridge towards the Gulf of Finland. On its upper course, the Luhdanjoki flood meadow has been a nature reserve since 1998 and has a bird tower. More than 40 bird species have been recorded around Kukonkoski's bends and riverside woods.
Activities include canoeing and rod fishing, mainly for pike and perch. Nearby Ristola was inhabited over 9,000 years ago. Restoration efforts aim to bring back migratory fish, with brown trout reappearing in the upper waters.
