This bronze equestrian statue is a commissioned work made in 1982 by sculptor Pentti Papinaho (1926–1992). It shows a 1920s cavalry sergeant on a rearing horse, a nod to the local dragoon regiments. It originally stood in the main hall of the SYP bank on Valtakatu, was donated to the city in 1988 and moved to the park. It was cast by the Venäläinen foundry in Kuopio, which specialises in art casting.
The statue stands on a grey granite pedestal, with a plaza and plantings built around it in 1988. It was restored in 2002: old cement was removed, channels were added and badly eroded parts were recast from the original moulds. The entrance to the park is wheelchair accessible.
