Built through the first Salpausselkä ridge, the canal links the Saimaa lake system via Viipuri to the Gulf of Finland. Construction began in 1845 and it opened on 7 September 1856. The museum occupies the former upper district head's residence, with a pantograph from 1844 and models of locks.
An outdoor display covers Pontus's early 17th-century excavation. The cultural trail between Mustola and Mälkiä locks is mostly easy but has some stairs. The museum café operates in summer. Wheelchair-accessible parking is available.
