The office arranges mediation in criminal cases and certain civil disputes under the Finnish Mediation Act. Mediation is voluntary, confidential, impartial and free of charge. The parties meet to discuss the harm caused by a crime or dispute.
Meetings are led by trained volunteer mediators who work under the professional guidance of the office. General management and supervision of mediation rest with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, and national coordination and statistics with the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).
