The market hall opened on 1 May 1901 and was designed by architects Walter Thomé and Karl Lindahl in neo-Gothic style. It is among the oldest market halls in Finland, the third oldest after Helsinki and Turku. It was renovated in the mid-1990s and again in 2020.
Stalls sell fresh fish, meat, game, reindeer, vegetables, bakery products and local food, with organic products among the offering. Breakfast, lunch and café treats are served in the restaurant inside the hall. Clothing, jewellery, handicrafts, spices, Oulu-made products and gifts are also on sale. Pop-up sales spaces can be rented in the hall. The car park, entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible.
